Self-experience is an essential component of specialist training in Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy. Since psychosomatic medicine is relationship-based medicine, the way in which the physician-patient relationship is shaped is therefore of particular importance to the success of treatment. Self-experience is intended to provide an opportunity to recognize, reflect on and, where appropriate, modify one's own relational patterns, some of which unconsciously influence psychotherapeutic and medical practice. To ensure the best possible learning experience, the self-experience setting should therefore correspond to the treatment setting that the physician will later use in their own practice.
Individual self-experience is offered by the colleagues who are identified as approved for this purpose on the Instructors page.
As particularly valuable for acquiring specialist knowledge, experience, and skills, we recommend at least one year of
co-therapy in group psychotherapy, if possible with the respective authorized training physician.
Group self-experience should preferably take place in an ongoing outpatient patient group that meets regularly. The following colleagues offer available places. External group self-experience (for example, GRAS, Altaussee, or Göttingen) may be approved upon application in individual cases. In this case, participants should preferably have completed at least one year of continuous co-therapy and have their own treatment experience as part of their specialist training. A corresponding application must be submitted to the APM Executive Board before beginning the external group self-experience.
